The Cranfield Crash Impact Centre

Crash safety development for road service vehicles in Thailand Each year, about 13,000 people die in road accidents in Thailand and several hundred thousand are injured. Many of these accidents occur when drivers crash into road service vehicles as these have to operate while traffic flows. Cranfield Impact Centre is working with industry partner, The National Metals and Materials Centre (a member of the National Science and Technology Development Agency in Thailand) to develop an aluminium foam crash box which can be installed at the rear of road service vehicles to avoid potential structural damage if another vehicle crashes into it while stationary. The project involves designing lightweight, low-cost solution that is able to absorb high levels of energy and cushion impact safely.
