Working with Cranfield was a great opportunity to bring business issues together with talented people from diverse backgrounds, all of whom were willing and ambitious to learn. It’s required a huge commitment from the whole business to make this happen – not only from the participants on the programmes, but also from the senior team who are providing high-level sponsorship and gentle pressure testing. I think the quality of the outcomes has benefited from all of that, and from the quality of the people we’ve worked with from Cranfield, the quality of the material that’s been created, the quite intense but fast learning that’s gone on, and the reflection that has encouraged participants to apply it to real life. The good thing about the Cranfield team is that everyone is very keen to learn about our business and how their knowledge, research and broader industry experience can be applied to our specific circumstances. It was impressed on us many times in the first few days that, unless you dedicate resource and free people up to address big organisational issues, you will just drift along and never really get anywhere. That’s why we ended up with the approach we did, where we’ve undertaken a number of different activities with different people in the business. We made ourselves listen and accept the fact that it would be hard for the participants because they had a day job to do as well. We were determined
