Improve your confidence in corporate finance
At Cranfield, we know that in today’s business environment, it is important that senior managers display confidence in corporate finance discussions and understand the financial implications of their strategic decisions. Our Finance for the Boardroom Programme will provide you with the skills and tools you need to successfully address financial performance, evaluate business plans and use financial strategy to create long-term value. This programme will not turn you into an accountant, but it will give you a greater understanding of the financial information you receive as a member of an executive team or board. A better appreciation of techniques will enhance your ability to interpret financial data and give you the confidence to demand relevant information. Our finance faculty use their own practical business experience to bring the subject to life, enabling you to apply the concepts in your own organisation.
Key outcomes include: • Using financial strategy to generate value in your business.
• A greater understanding of the practical implications of investment decisions and acquisitions. • A deeper insight into how your business model translates into the accounting numbers.

Programme team
Professor Ruth Bender Programme Director and Professor of Corporate Financial Strategy Ruth joined the Cranfield faculty in 1994, having completed her MBA there. Prior to this she was a partner in Grant Thornton, where she specialised in corporate finance. During this period she undertook various secondments, including a year working as a private equity investment manager in the City. She is a chartered accountant and was for 13 years a committee
member of the ICAEW’s Faculty of Finance and Management. Other outside roles have included non-executive directorships of a Health Authority and an NHS Trust, and membership of the Independent Remuneration Panels for two local authorities. Ruth has a broad range of teaching experience, including degree courses, open programmes and customised executive education, from new recruits through to board level. Her main teaching areas include corporate finance and corporate governance. Her research interest is in the practical implications of corporate governance as it affects boards and board committees. In particular, she has worked with non-executive directors on remuneration committees and audit committees of larger companies. Ruth’s PhD focused on executive remuneration, and she conducted interviews to determine how executive pay was determined in FTSE 350 companies.
Ruth’s current research relates to executive pay consultants, looking in detail at their role in the process of pay determination.
