Building resilience and capability: Shaping the future of Morgan Sindall Construction
I found taking part in Shaping our Future really enjoyable and personally very rewarding. On day one, I connected with someone doing a similar job to me in our Cambridge office and we’ve become friends. There were a few people in similar positions that I’ve formed a close working relationship with and even those I haven’t gave me an insight into the other Morgan Sindall businesses. For example, in the North West, they are also very tuned in to carbon reduction, but in a different way to us in Cardiff. Whereas we decided to focus on this area as a result of what our clients want, they themselves as a business have chosen to do so. It has been interesting to compare the two approaches. When we did our presentation at the end of the 16 weeks, I stood in the room and thought to myself that anyone there that day – whether our MD or any of the regional directors in the business – could ask me any question and I would be comfortable answering it, because I knew my knowledge was strong. That was a fantastic place to be. From a personal point of view, I think taking part in Shaping our Future has raised my profile massively within the business. When I meet new people at director level, they have heard of me and the work I’m doing. Suddenly you find yourself in a position where you’re talking to different people at a different level and having a different conversation. It’s also been quite empowering. I’ve worked in other businesses where you experience the same frustrations every day, but you can’t change them. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m in the right job with the right boss, but I’ve found that in Morgan Sindall I can work to change the things I don’t like. To have my opinion sought at the level of Shaping our Future was a privilege. You don’t get opportunities like that every day and I think I made the most of it.
